Collards – Champion


Brassica oleracea acephala

(Collard Greens).  Member of the cabbage family this leafy green grows 60 to 90cm. A favourite in parts of the USA, its mild cabbage taste improves with cold weather.

Harvest the entire plant when small or single leaves when older.  Best taste when picked in cold weather.

Sow seed 1 cm deep under glass September (cold), Aug to Nov (warm), and August to March in the tropics. Must be planted in a warm position in cold areas. Do not transplant into cold soil.  Space 75 cm apart with 90 cm between rows.  Expect germination in 2 to 3 weeks at 23 deg. C. soil temperature. Pick when young for the best taste.
