Chicory – Witlof


(Cichorium intybus).

Tender and tasty blanched heads are produced for salad or cooking use.

Plants grown to produce roots which are dug in autumn and planted in loose soil in the dark to produce the delicious blanched witlofs. Sow seed in Spring.

Used to grow blanched “Witlofs”.

Sow seed 2 cm deep, thinning to 15 cm apart.  Dig roots in autumn, cutting tops to within 5 cm. of the root. Place upright in large box of loose soil, keeping dark until hearts or “chicons” form.  Expect germination in around 10 days at 18 deg.C. soil temp.
