Asparagus – Mary Washington 500


Asparagus officinalis

An old reliable variety capable of giving heavy crops of thick spears.  Fine flavour and high in Folic acid, rich in Potassium and Vitamins B6, A & C. Resistant to Asparagus rust.

Perennial lasting up to 30 years.

Sow early spring 2cm – 2.5cm deep with a similar distance between seeds in the row. Germination may take three weeks.  Keep well-watered. Plant out to permanent site, 30 to 45 cm apart, in the following winter. Best in deep, moist and well drained friable soils. Best not to harvest until after the second year. Heavy feeders.
